The Department of Math and Science offers the bachelor of science degree in biology and a bachelor of science degree in exercise science, both with a minor in biblical studies. The department also offers a minor in biology for those pursuing majors in other departments.
Biology
The biology major introduces students to the concepts and role of
biology as an integrative science, helping them to discover and
interpret the characteristics of nature as part of God’s creation.
Courses in the biology program encourage students to reflect on the
relationship between the life sciences and the Christian faith. Biology
majors and students who take components of the biology curriculum are
expected to understand the concepts and processes of biology as a
scientific discipline.
Biology helps students learn skills such as critical observation,
analysis, working independently, accuracy and precision, research,
teamwork and problem solving. Biology majors include students planning careers in the laboratory or in
the field, as well as those preparing for graduate study in science,
education and the health professions.
Exercise Science
For the bachelor of science in exercise science, a broad based approach to the science of exercise and fitness along with strategies used to design and implement comprehensive health programs for the public and private sectors is provided. Within the exercise science major, a student can select one of two areas of specialization: Internship or Pre-Professional. Students choosing an internship will spend a full semester at work in a health or exercise workplace. The Pre-Professional electives provide students with an additional 12 hours of upper-level laboratory science coursework designed to prepare the one for graduate studies.
