Point Kicks Off 2012-13 Academic Year with Record Enrollment

After it recently moved main campuses from East Point, Ga. to West Point, Ga., Point University has started the 2012-13 academic year with 571 full-time students enrolled, a 27.45 percent increase from last academic year. This shows a continued trend of record growth for the University.

"We are so pleased with the enrollment growth and the increase in students,” said Stacy Bartlett, vice president of enrollment management. “This means that Point University can influence even more students for Christ-centered service and leadership throughout the world."

New and returning traditional students moved into the Point Living Community in Valley, Ala., which is just a few miles from West Point, the week of August 20.New students spent Monday and Tuesday, August 20 and 21, moving into their apartments and attending orientation meetings. On Tuesday night, the University hosted a campus-wide cookout with help from churches in the Greater Valley Area. University students, faculty and staff gathered to eat, have fun, and celebrate the coming year.

“There’s something about seeing students come back to school or begin their education. But this year, exciting isn’t quite the word; exciting doesn’t do justice to it all,” said Wye Huxford, dean of the chapel and vice president for spiritual formation. “To see students begin to move in, crowd the hall ways, go to class, stop by my office, and even take my parking place – there simply isn’t a word that does that justice. All I can say is that God must be a part of it all – no human could have pulled this off without His help.”

Immediately following a Convocation service at the Sportsplex in Valley on August 22, students started their first classes of the fall semester in the Academic and Fine Arts Centers. Wye Huxford, dean of the chapel and vice president for spiritual formation, led the Convocation service. President Dean Collins gave the Commencement address. The theme for this semester is “Build” and encourages students to build relationships with the University family, relationships with the community, and their relationships with God.

“We are a Christian university. It is our mission not just to provide you with a quality higher education experience, but to give you a Christ-centered higher education experience,” said Collins. “Because we believe that if you’re academically prepared, built and established on a firm foundation, you will become servant leaders who will create culture for Christ wherever God calls you to serve and his kingdom will be extended.”
