Former L.A. Ram to Lead Point University Football

Today, Point University appointed David Rocker as head coach for the Skyhawks football program. Rocker joined the Point University staff this year as a Defensive Line Assistant Coach for the Skyhawks, helping them to a 2-8 record in the team’s inaugural year of play.

“The Skyhawks nation welcomes David Rocker as Point University’s new football coach,” said Alan Wilson, interim athletic director. “No doubt our football program has a bright future as Coach ‘Rock’ and his staff help our student-athletes attempt to reach their full potential both on and off the field.”

Rocker racked up a list of honors as a defensive tackle for the Auburn Tigers: a two-time All-SEC player, a Lombardi finalist, and a member of the Walter Camp and Kodak Coaches All-America team. Rocker was drafted to the NFL in 1990, and played for three years with the Los Angeles Rams before he returned to Auburn to finish his degree in 2011.

“While this job was nothing that I was seeking or expecting, sometimes God calls us to serve in a capacity when we just have to say, ‘I will go,’” said Rocker. “I will humbly serve in this capacity to the best of my ability.”

His experience as a player at Auburn University and with the NFL, along with his coaching background at Point University, has prepared Rocker to lead the Skyhawks as Head Football Coach.
In addition, Rocker’s experience serving as a pastor for a number of years equips him to recruit the kind of student-athlete Point University seeks and to mentor players on the team.

Dean Collins, president of the University, said, “David is a great match for Point University as Head Football Coach because of his passion for growing Christian leaders, his experience in college and NFL football, and the valuable role he played as an assistant football coach during Point’s first year in its new home.”
