Point University will discontinue six athletic programs this year to adapt to the changing collegiate athletic landscape and ensure the best student-athlete experience.
The six programs to be discontinued are men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s swimming, and men’s and women’s cross country/track.
“Our mission is to provide a diverse, Christ-honoring culture of excellence in athletics,” said Jaunelle White, vice president of intercollegiate athletics and chief student development officer. “Our coaches and student-athletes are such an important part of the Point community, so this decision was very difficult. However, these changes best position us for continued athletic excellence.”
Point is providing resources to affected student-athletes, including assisting those who wish to transfer to complete their athletic eligibility.
This fall, Point will field 13 varsity athletic teams and three junior varsity, representing nearly 400 student-athletes.
“We respect the contributions the coaches and student-athletes in the affected sports have made to Point’s athletic history,” said White. “This decision in no way reflects on their commitment to excellence, and we honor their achievements.”
