The Department of Math and Science offers the bachelor of science degree in biology and a bachelor of science degree in exercise science, both with a minor in biblical studies. The department also offers a minor in biology for those pursuing majors in other departments.

The biology major introduces students to the concepts and role of biology as an integrative science, helping them to discover and interpret the characteristics of nature as part of God’s creation. Courses in the biology program encourage students to reflect on the relationship between the life sciences and the Christian faith. Biology majors and students who take components of the biology curriculum are expected to understand the concepts and processes of biology as a scientific discipline.

Biology helps students learn skills such as critical observation, analysis, working independently, accuracy and precision, research, teamwork and problem solving. Biology majors include students planning careers in the laboratory or in the field, as well as those preparing for graduate study in science, education and the health professions.

Exercise Science
For the bachelor of science in exercise science, a broad based approach to the science of exercise and fitness along with strategies used to design and implement comprehensive health programs for the public and private sectors is provided. Within the exercise science major, a student can select one of two areas of specialization: Internship or Pre-Professional. Students choosing an internship will spend a full semester at work in a health or exercise workplace. The Pre-Professional electives provide students with an additional 12 hours of upper-level laboratory science coursework designed to prepare students for graduate studies.

The primary objective of the Math and Science Department at Point University is to provide academically rigorous training that prepares students for careers in scientific disciplines while fostering the development of a Christian worldview of the sciences.

Our programs of study in biology and exercise science help students build a solid base of knowledge in physical and life sciences through scripturally-consistent curricula that provides them with the comprehension, skills, and proficiencies needed to be successful and competitive in their future endeavors.

The biology degree program is ideal for students who have an interest in gaining a comprehensive mastery of major concepts and methodologies of the biological sciences. Typically, students in this program intend to pursue careers in healthcare professions, research or graduate studies, or other science-related disciplines.

The exercise science major offers a scientifically–based curriculum that prepares students with a foundation for entry level careers in healthcare or related fitness industries, successful completion of national certifications, and/or the pursuit of advanced and professional degrees in related fields of study.

The caring and committed faculty members in the Math and Science Department are knowledgeable in their respective fields, steadfast in their faith, and always seek to integrate a biblical perspective in course material.Students in our department benefit from small class sizes and accessibility to professors that is not common in larger universities.

Graduates with a biology degree will be prepared for post-baccalaureate training in rewarding and demanding fields such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, teaching and research, or jobs in government and industry.

Career options for graduates with a degree in exercise science include athletic training, sports psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, sports medicine, chiropractic medicine, personal training, health/fitness/wellness instruction, and coaching.

It is our desire that our biology and exercise science majors will be strengthened in their relationship with God while studying science at Point University.  Upon completion of either program, our graduates will possess a greater understanding and appreciation of our roles as stewards and caretakers of God’s creation, be able to communicate and defend a Christian perspective on ethical and controversial scientific issues, and be a witness for Christ in their God-ordained calling. Wherever our graduates choose to use their degrees, they will leave Point equipped to be competent and spiritually-confident leaders in the workplace.
