Graduation May 2019

Point University graduated 127 students in a commencement ceremony at Cascade Hills Church in Columbus, Georgia, on Saturday, May 4.

During commencement, President Dean Collins ’79, presented the Hathcock Award, the highest honor for a Point graduate, which recognizes two outstanding students. These students, one from the University College and the other from the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, have excelled in academics, leadership and Christian character during their time at Point.

Gary Shorrow, an international student from Liberia, received the award for the University College. Shorrow also graduated with a bachelor of business administration in accounting and was awarded the Google Cloud Academic All-district Award during his final season playing soccer for Point.

Crystal O’Dell, of LaGrange, Georgia, received the Hathcock Award for the College of Graduate and Professional Studies. O’Dell earned a bachelor of science in information technology. She was among the first to graduate from this new program offered by Point.

The speaker at commencement was Robert C. Donovan, an assistant special agent in charge of the Criminal Investigative Division in the U.S. Secret Service. A native of East Point, Georgia, Donovan received a bachelor’s degree with honors from Georgia College & State University on June 13, 1998.  He holds a master of science degree from Sam Houston State University. Donovan spoke about how life is a game and graduating was the ticket to the game. He also gave advice for the graduating students to take with them after they leave – time moves fast, take time to reflect on accomplishments, make a conscious effort to put down the smart phone, always attend funerals when you can because it resets your perspective on life and don’t believe everything you read and only half of what you see.
