Off to the Races! Point University May 2020 Commencement

WEST POINT, GA – Point University graduated 206 students in a virtual commencement ceremony on Saturday.

During the ceremony, President Dean Collins ’79 celebrated graduates despite the unusual circumstances resulting from the recent coronavirus outbreak. “While this is a little bit different, a little bit unusual, we want to recognize you and honor you,” said Collins.

President Collins also presented the highest honor for a Point graduate, the Hathcock Award, which recognizes two outstanding students who have excelled in academics, leadership and Christian character while at Point. Online student Mailee Barkdull received the award while earning a bachelor of science in applied ministry. Ashley Kaeser received the Hathcock Award for the traditional residential campus. Kaeser earned a bachelor of science in middle grades education.

The commencement address was delivered by Louie Giglio, global pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia and founder of the Passion Movement. Giglio encouraged graduates to continue to trust in God when their plans are diverted. He reminded the graduates not to settle for normal. “You were not created for normal,” said Giglio. “You are extraordinary, not because of the things you have done or even the things you can do, although these may be exceptional, but you are extraordinary because of the One whose image you bear.”

Graduates were also charged by a trumpet-playing Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-fil-A, to live their lives on mission for Christ as they head “off to the races.” “God has called us to acts of service and kindness, no matter what your profession might be. So we’re all on mission, and we’re all in full-time Christian service,” said Cathy.

Despite the unconventional ceremony, graduates were celebrated for their accomplishments. Spring graduates have the additional opportunity to participate in Point University’s December commencement.
