Limited, In-Person Commencement Planned for May

Point University will hold a limited, in-person graduation ceremony in May, the University announced this week. This will be the first physical graduation ceremony since December 2019, after 2020 graduation ceremonies were held virtually due to the pandemic.

The ceremony will be held at New Hope Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Georgia, on Saturday, May 1. The number of guests will be limited in order to allow for proper safety precautions. The ceremony will be live streamed and recorded for those who are unable to be physically present.

“We are so proud of the accomplishments of our graduates, and we want to honor them with an in-person ceremony they can share with their loved ones,” said Dr. Stephen Waers, chief academic officer. “At the same time, our commitment to the well-being of our graduates means that we have chosen to limit the number of in-person guests. We look forward to sharing a safe celebration with our graduates and their families, whether they are able to attend in person or virtually.”

The speaker for May commencement will be Dr. Lamar Hardwick, a pastor, author and speaker. Hardwick, who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age 36, has spoken and written extensively on issues of disability and inclusion in the church. He is the pastor of Tri-Cities Church in East Point, Georgia, whose building formerly served as Westside Chapel on the University’s historic campus.

2020 Graduates: The University will invite you to walk at a future commencement ceremony, when pandemic restrictions are lifted enough to allow for larger crowds to gather safely. The May 2021 ceremony will be limited to May 2021 graduates. When a future ceremony that includes 2020 graduates is planned, the Registrar’s Office will communicate with you via email.
