Athletics Summer Camps

Athletic Summer CampsFor many Point University athletes, their training and experiences on the field aren’t just meant to win them a game or a trophy. They believe their athletic abilities are an opportunity to minister to the community and influence people around them.

This summer, coaches and players from the Point baseball, softball, soccer, and basketball teams will impact local kids by training them in their favorite sport. The sports camps, hosted by the City of West Point Parks and Recreation Department, are an opportunity for Point athletes and coaches to give back to the community.

“It’s important for Point to be part of the local community,” says Zachary Roberts, assistant baseball coach for the Skyhawks. “We want our players to be an example to younger boys in the community, and hopefully one day they’ll be Skyhawks, too.”

Assistant coach John Tyler coordinated the baseball camp that ran from June 13-17 at the West Point Parks and Recreation fields. Athletic Summer CampsHe and his team taught local boys age 5-12 the fundamentals of baseball and good sportsmanship.

The Point softball team led a softball camp at the same time, coordinated by head coach Jennifer Perkins-Tyler and assistant coach Sarah Warren. Girls age 5-12 learned how to pitch, hit, and catch and how to be part of a team.

“The camp is a way for us to build relationships with the community,” said Perkins-Tyler. “It helps build community support for the Point Skyhawks and brings them to our games.”

Point athletes know how much West Point has contributed to their success—from field maintenance to facilities to fans in the stadium. The camps are about more than sports skills building; it’s a way to show appreciation for a community that has consistently supported the Skyhawks.

“The City of West Point Recreation does a lot for us,” says Warren. “It’s a way for us to give back.”

Athletic Summer CampsThe local community still has opportunities to experience these incredible sports camps. Co-ed soccer and basketball camps will be held July 11-15 and July 18-22, respectively. Registration is still open, and you can register by calling (706) 645-3529. To find out more information visit the West Point Parks and Recreation website or PointSkyhawks.com.
