CGPS Spotlight: Dr. Joann Adeogun

What is your title/role at Point?

My title is College of Graduate and Professional Studies Department Chair, Business & Leadership Programs. I see my role as working closely with others to meet the mission of Point University and strategically thinking how to do so in an environment that is constantly changing both internally and externally. Finally, I also see my role as motivating and appreciating the individuals that go above and beyond to make both the Business & Leadership department and CGPS efficient and effective.

 

What brought you to Point?

Having worked at several Christian universities, I applied at Point but did not hear anything for months and actually forgot about the position. A follow-up call from Dr. Chris Davis regarding an email to which I had not responded (sent several weeks earlier) again started the process. What is so interesting is, I never received the email he sent. Thus, I saw that follow-up call from Dr. Davis as divine intervention. Point University is where God wanted me to be.

 

What is your biggest professional accomplishment?

I would say I have several professional accomplishments that are near and dear to my heart. First, each time I hear from my former students that have gone on to achieve a graduate or doctorate degree due to my influence and belief when others said they couldn’t do it – I smile, because I honor those that mentored and believed in me. Second, would be the completion of my first book and journal articles in the field of Human Resource Management (staying current in my field of expertise). And, finally, the volunteer work that I do that prepares others in the field of Human Resource Management. My motto is “To whom much is given, much is required.”

 

What is your biggest passion outside of your career?

My biggest passion is helping those less fortunate or those that are marginalized by society. Senior citizens, children in developing countries, the homeless and victimized all stir a desire in me to lend a helping hand. One of my favorite quotes reminds me of why I am here:

 

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

 

What is your favorite class to teach?

My favorite class to teach is Human Resource Management and the subsets of this discipline (Employment Law, Training & Development, Performance Management, Employee Relations, Employee Engagement, etc.). There is nothing like sharing how this field functions and seeing student’s grasp that it is more than “hiring and firing employees.” I am passionate about this field, because it is influenced by what takes place in the external environment. So, whatever is happening today externally will have a major impact on the workplace at Point University.
